On Breaking Away from Your Homeland

It takes about 6 months, really. To move all of the things, change all of the things, notify pertinent people of important things, and give things away. When becoming an Expat, we mustn’t forget about the ten grueling trips to the State Department required to establish your authenticity. Thank god it was only an hour’s drive away. This article is for any professional, parent, or trailing spouse, but I am a professional teacher. It’s not to be confused with professional esl teacher, as I know little about that process.

Our little family of three left The States on our son’s second birthday. On that day, I learned that it is totally possible to run two miles and play beach ball toss in a jumbo jet over the course of a 17-hour flight. Easy.

The hard part was lugging the 6 pieces of luggage, diaper bag, toy bag, purse, backpacks, and all of the electronics stored therein. We left with only the first-months rent and $400 in cash for the next month. I would have been nervous about these small details, were it not for my little clay statue of Ganesha tucked in my bags. throughout the process he worked diligently, lending us arm after arm every time I thought I was going to lose my mind. He started with four, but the little guy only had one remaining.
